Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa

What is it ?

People who suffer from Anorexia nervosa starve themselves. They don’t eat, refuse to eat, avoid eating, basically do anything to not eat. It doesn’t mean that they are not hungry. They feel hungry, but they see it as a sign that they are successful in controlling themselves.

Why?

Anorexia is really an emotional, psychological illness. Those who suffer from it usually see thinness as a key to their happiness and success in life. And if you think that these are people who achieve nothing in their lives so that they identify success with starvation, then you’re wrong. A lot of anorexics are high achievers: hard working, thoughtful and always trying to be perfect.

What are the effects?

The body of an anorexic is deprived of the nutrients it needs to mantain its normal, healthy function. That’s why the body slows down metabolic processes: the heart beats more slowly, blood pressure drops. These signs show that the heart is changing; the slower the heart beat and the lower the blood pressure, the higher the risk of heart failure and death. Anorexics also suffer from muscle loss and weakness. Their bones become brittle ang fragile becuase they undergo osteoporosis, even at a very young age. They suffer dehydration, which can lead to kidney failure. They always feel tired, cold and weak, and they often faint. They have dry hair and skin and suffer from hair loss. Soft hair grow all over their bodies in an effort to keep the body warm. A girl’s menstrual period becomes irregular and even may stop altogether, while the level of sex hormones drops in a guy.

Warning signs

Dramatic weight loss: an anorexic can weigh as low as 85% under the normal, healthy weight for their age and height. The person denied being hungry and always tries to avoid eating, making up excuses like “i’m not hungry.” ”I’ve eaten out with friends” etc.... The person is very choosy about food, eating only small amounts of only a few kinds of food, and then avoids all kinds of food altogether. They are obsessed with exercise to burn off calories. The person is very critical about her /his appearance, and constantly afraid of being too fat, despite the weight loss.

A girl or a Guy thing?

One in five anorexics are men. Although our society puts more stress on women being thin ( most guys are satisfied with the way they look, and some even view thinness as a weakness), men in certain conditions might suffer from anorexia. They usually were overweight as children or have been dieting. They have jobs or participate in sports that demand thinness. Male models, actors, and entertainers, jockeys, and runners, as well as some wrestlers who tried to loss weight to qualify for a lower fighting level, are more at risk than men in general.

Beauty Prevails ,,, No MoRe!!!

open a magazine. Take a look at the pictures in it. Wht d you see? Mostly, you will see people, and most probably, beautiful people. Now turn on your TV. keep punching the remote until you find a channel featuring a sinetron. More beautiful people. Wait for the ads, and then once again, gorgeous, good looking, thin, and pretty people. there are sure a lot of them, all right !
But wait a minute, is the real? is the world really full of tall, slim,'beautiful' people? of course not.
So, why do we see those images everywhere so that we come to believe being thin and beautiful is a normal way of life? what's wrong with just being ourselves?
We, or many of us anyway, tend to judge people by their appearance. We rarely bother to look beyond the surface. When we see a slim, pretty woman or a handsome, muscular man, we assume that her personality is as nice as her looks. What we often overlook is the fact that looks don't necessarily represent personality nor behavior.
We often think that looks alone can achieve everything. sometimes it does, but often it doesn't. You can be fat, thin, short, tall, dark-skinned, fair-skinned, curly-haired, wavy-haired,etc... and still be successful and famous.
Of course, it is only natural that everyone wants to look their best. as long as there is no harm in achieving it. What i am concerned about is the fact that some people tend to put so much emphasis on their appearance that they forget to consider the more subtle yet important things. For instance, thin is trendy, so everyone is dying to be thin at all costs, even paying for it with their own life ( they are dying all right by becoming anorexic and bulimic).
Maybe the appropriate question is this: is being thin and pretty or handsome and muscular the ultimate key to happiness? is it worth sacrificing your health and starving yourself to get slim?
There is this quote that goes 'people love people who think they are beautiful.' What do you say to that? and there is another one, by Helen Keller: ' The most beautiful and wonderful thing in the world can't be touched or even seen, it must be felt with the heart.'
