open a magazine. Take a look at the pictures in it. Wht d you see? Mostly, you will see people, and most probably, beautiful people. Now turn on your TV. keep punching the remote until you find a channel featuring a sinetron. More beautiful people. Wait for the ads, and then once again, gorgeous, good looking, thin, and pretty people. there are sure a lot of them, all right !
But wait a minute, is the real? is the world really full of tall, slim,'beautiful' people? of course not.
So, why do we see those images everywhere so that we come to believe being thin and beautiful is a normal way of life? what's wrong with just being ourselves?
We, or many of us anyway, tend to judge people by their appearance. We rarely bother to look beyond the surface. When we see a slim, pretty woman or a handsome, muscular man, we assume that her personality is as nice as her looks. What we often overlook is the fact that looks don't necessarily represent personality nor behavior.
We often think that looks alone can achieve everything. sometimes it does, but often it doesn't. You can be fat, thin, short, tall, dark-skinned, fair-skinned, curly-haired, wavy-haired,etc... and still be successful and famous.
Of course, it is only natural that everyone wants to look their best. as long as there is no harm in achieving it. What i am concerned about is the fact that some people tend to put so much emphasis on their appearance that they forget to consider the more subtle yet important things. For instance, thin is trendy, so everyone is dying to be thin at all costs, even paying for it with their own life ( they are dying all right by becoming anorexic and bulimic).
Maybe the appropriate question is this: is being thin and pretty or handsome and muscular the ultimate key to happiness? is it worth sacrificing your health and starving yourself to get slim?
There is this quote that goes 'people love people who think they are beautiful.' What do you say to that? and there is another one, by Helen Keller: ' The most beautiful and wonderful thing in the world can't be touched or even seen, it must be felt with the heart.'
